There are two types of USB serial converters in the industry. Each of them has a unique chipset.

  • USB Serial Drivers for FTDI Chip Adapters
  • USB Serial Drivers for Prolific Chip Adapters

We strongly recommend that you purchase FTDI chipped adapters over the Prolific - especially for 64 bit machines. The converter shown on this screen runs well in Windows 7 without causing the blue-screen like the Prolific adapters.

The benefit of this device is that it is isolated from electrical surges. The standard units are not.
